Promethean Board Initiative
November 9, 2007
Our teachers, through professional development opportunities, research, school visits, and actual trial demonstrations have become convinced that adding Active Board technology into all Eaton classrooms will help us engage our students and motivate them to learn content that can be quite difficult. We have infused technology into our teaching, but we continue to lag behind our students who are true “digital natives.” Learners today are accustomed to being entertained through interactive games, television, DVD videos, iPods, and computers. If we are to compete for their attention and add richness to the curriculum, we must embrace how they learn best. Perhaps you had the opportunity on Parent Conference night to witness a lesson on the Promethean Active Boards in Rooms 301 and 108. If you did, I’m sure you discovered what we have – this tool engages the learner and makes even the most unexciting curriculum content come to life. Thanks to your generosity through Rocket Romp, we have committed to buy seven Promethean Active Boards for Eaton classrooms. While this is exciting, that means 32 classrooms will have to wait to utilize this technology. Several staff members are busy writing technology grants, but the results are uncertain, and the wait is long. We have developed a four year plan to make our dream a reality, but we also know many of our students will be “across the road” at North Middle School by the time we have full implementation. This leads us to make an unusual request. As we approach the end of the year, we know individuals and businesses are looking ahead to tax time. Many find they lack the deductions to reduce this tax burden. If this is the case for you, we are seeking business and individual sponsors to outfit classrooms with the Promethean active boards. A donation to the school would result in a sponsorship plaque being placed outside the classroom door acknowledging the generous gift. In addition, we will write a letter certifying this donation for tax deduction purposes. We plan to make this sponsorship a year round event. While we will not sell items or conduct a true fundraiser, we will apply all school donations to this technology initiative. In cases where an entire class works together to obtain an active board, we will acknowledge this with a plaque stating the class of 2007-2008 made the donation. Through the Loudon County bid process, we can purchase a 78” Promethean Active Board, 25 active vote “clickers”, a LCD projector, unlimited teacher training, installation and 5 yr. warranty for right at $4,000/classroom. We realize this is expensive, and if we were not absolutely convinced of the merits of this tool, we would not be asking. If you have questions, need more information, or would like to see a demonstration, please contact the school at 986-2420. As always we appreciate the support you give us to help our Eaton Rockets Soar!

I was able to see the demonstrations on Parent Conference night and I was so intrigued with this technology! It is exciting to think that our kids will have the opportunity to use these active boards, but also sad to realize that not all classrooms will have these immediately. However, I am so glad to see the leadership at Eaton recognize that the traditional classroom is evolving into a more technological classroom, and that Eaton is embracing this change! Will all of our kids have the luxury of having one of these active boards in their classroom over the next year? No. But what we have to remember is that we’re taking steps in the right direction, so that in a few years, every classroom WILL be equipped with an active board. I can’t wait to see what lies in store for my children at Eaton! Thanks Eaton staff for not being afraid of change!

This promethean board is a learning tool. Everybody learns on it. It makes the whole class smart. What I like about it is it has games on it. Each class that has a promethean board are using it every second. It helps me get smarter every second we use it. If I have one I would use it a lot. When ever we use it I think what are we doing.I love this board. What would it be like with out it? Everthing that happens is great.

I agree with my students about our new Promethean board. This interactive board is not only a very strong teaching tool for me but a strong and effective learning tool for my students. My classroom particpation is often so great that I have to keep a chart to make it fair that I give each student time at the board. Some students mentioned “games” and “movies” as activities they like to participate in. These educational games are ones teachers find on websites that are used as teaching tools. I am also able to show educational videos from great websites/programs such as Riverdeep, Brain Pop Jr. United Streaming, and other resources. Using the board to show these videos often “feels” like you are at the “movies” because the screen is so big. However, you couldn’t peel one eye away from that board when the videos are playing!! This interactive board also come with thousands(15,000 to be exact) of teaching resources for me to use in all subject areas. I love finding new resources to aid me in teaching my lessons. This board is not used to replace anything in the classroom, but to be used inconjuction with the educator to make learning a beautiful and wonderful thing! I encourage you stop by a classroom and see all the wonders that take place when using a Promethean board.

I understand these boards are quite expensive, and so we can’t expect to have one in every classroom to start with. My question is how did you decide who got the first boards? I’m sure it was a very difficult decision!!

We wish we could afford to outfit every classroom all at once; but of course, this was not feasible. We have a School Technology Team made up of representatives from each grade level. These teachers are the ones who completed more than a year of research on active boards prior to this initiative. The teachers serving on this committee were the first to receive the boards and the resulting 12 hours of professional development. They will become our in-house experts and help train all other teachers as we add boards to each grade level.
