Traffic Headaches
Uncategorized August 16th, 2007We know traffic continues to be a “bear” each morning. You can expect it to get worse, though, before it gets better. All kindergarten and Pre-K students will be here on August 23, so you can expect long lines. Our staff will have “all hands on deck” but we are not able to control the flow off campus. Usually, things smooth out after Labor Day. By then, parents have established routines and not so many moms and dads are walking students into the building. If you have suggestions or ideas for improvement, please let us know.

I know traffic can be a headache in the mornings when you’re trying to get your child to school on time, but for the childrens’ safety, please don’t try to take shortcuts. It’s better for your child to be tardy than to be injured. Last week I witnessed something that completely blew my mind. I was sitting in line on Hwy 70 waiting to turn left onto Hickory Creek, when I noticed a vehicle in the far right lane stop and then 4 girls got out of the vehicle and proceeded to dart across traffic on Hwy 70 to get over to Hickory Creek, and then dart across the traffic on Hickory Creek to get over to the schools. I’m not sure whether the girls were students at Eaton or North Middle, but regardless, I felt like the safety of these girls was compromised because of a parent/guardian/etc. being in too big of a rush to wait their turn in line.
I want to compliment most parents for being courteous in line. Remember – we’re being examples for our kids in everything we do. They see how we respond in traffic and hear what we say! Thanks to all of you who have been nice to let the next car turning get in front of you. When we work together, it goes much smoother!

Another helpful hint is for parents walking children into the building to always go to the police officer on duty. He will hold groups just a minute until the traffic comes to a natural stop. That allows a smoother flow but provides students and parents a safe crossing.

In the mornings, cars are pulling up to the parking lot side of the building next to the orange cones to let their child cross the parking lot to the front door. If this is not suppose to be the drop off spot, why are they allowed to do this? It seems like a very unsafe practice for the child and interrupts the flow of traffic. Also, if a child is school age, in most cases, they should be required to be dropped at the door without a parent having to walk them in. The “umbrella” parents are stalling the traffic flow.

Linda is correct that parents should not be dropping off students in the side parking lot. This is not an approved area, nor is it safe for children. I will inform our two officers of this, and see if they can help me enforce the rules. We always encourage parents to drop off rather than walk in. The numerous pedestrians do hamper the traffic flow and create congestion in the buidling and hallways. We realize some children have more difficulty separating, but we also want to work on that independence as the year progresses.

Traffic is a big, big problem, I do agree. We all need to be safe and wait our turns and keep all of our children safe! I have been trying to register my child for mealpay at Eaton’s and it keeps telling me that my childs I.D. # is wrong, but he uses this # to purchase his lunch everyday. Can someone help me out please? Thanks, Marie–Joe’s Mom.

Mealpay can be a little confusing. Rather than using the child’s PIN number, type in the entire social security number with no dashes or spaces. If it still isn’t working, call toll free at 1-866-210-1554.

Wow! What a difference a little plan from Jill makes in the life of all of us in the morning. The PTO’s plan and assistance with school drop off has decreased the morning wait tremendously. The days are gone of finally dropping off after you’ve waited for 30 minutes or more and are frustrated with the wait and the inconsiderate nature of some who feel entitled to make the rest of us wait. And, because of the difference, we can all head off on our days cheerfully. THANK YOU!!!
